Under a brooding sky in Gourock, Inverclyde, a lone swimmer glides through the electric blue water of a seaside lido. Shot by Martin Parr in 2004 as part of his A8 series, the image is framed by rows of empty white loungers and a stormy expanse of sea and mountains beyond. The contrast between the saturated pool and the dark, wind-stirred horizon creates a scene both surreal and deadpan.
