The Story

After studying printing in Leipzig, and chemistry and physics at the Sorbonne in the 1930s, David “Chim” Seymour decided to stay on in Paris. When a family friend lent him a camera, he began work as a freelance photographer, forging connections in the industry that would eventually lead him to meet Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa. In 1947, along with Cartier-Bresson, Capa, George Rodger, and William Vandivert, he founded Magnum Photos.

Pictured here, Pablo Picasso unveils his painting Guernica in 1937, at the Spanish Pavilion of the International World Fair.
